Storm and Surge Protection for Air Conditioners

We’re right in the midst of summer here in Southwest Florida and that means two things, weather-wise: high, humid temps, and thunderstorms. Your AC unit is there to protect you from the heat, but are you doing what you can to protect it from the electrical irregularities that can be caused by storms (among other things)? You’re well aware that storms can cause power outages, but the electricity that flows into your house—and therefore your appliances—isn’t just an ON/OFF situation. And electricity isn’t something you want to mess around with. You need to rely on experts. When a storm interrupts the power flow—whether it’s a blackout, a brownout, or other irregularity—the disturbance means that the electricity can come back with a vengeance: a power surge. When the power exceeds 169 volts, it can damage your appliances, including your HVAC, and specifically its compressor. And while losing your AC unit during a storm is no fun, it’s even worse when the storm moves on and the hot summer weather returns. Obviously we’re here to make repairs and/or replacements when AC units suffer storm damage. But ideally we want to protect your unit before it’s damaged by a power surge. Here at Brown, we offer Ditek brand surge protection and Supco Start assist kits for compressors. After a power outage or brown out, these products help protect the equipment from major electrical failures and damage. Not only are these excellent products, but you can trust our electrical experts to assess your home’s power situation and properly install these products to protect your air conditioning. Expert installation is necessary for the products to do their jobs effectively. And proper installation is also an important consideration when it comes to maintaining your AC unit’s warranty. The last thing you want to do is invest in surge protection, only to have your warranty voided by sub-par HVAC work. Brown offers more than 50 years of HVAC experience, specifically in the Southwest Florida region. Our technicians are certified, experienced, and thoroughly familiar with local electrical patterns as well as the latest state-of-the-art surge protection devices. Power surges are an unavoidable part of being connected to the electrical grid, especially in Florida, where we consistently experience epic weather. If you haven’t yet had a surge protection device installed for your AC unit, now’s the time.
